What Does A Swimming Pool Have To Do With The 5 Senses?

Building your backyard oasis can be stressful if you are worried about what to incorporate in terms of design. A good rule of thumb in design is to build a space that can stimulate all 5 senses. Swimming pools can often stimulate most of your senses, hence why they are a prominent feature in backyard oases. As pool designers, we aim to design and build pools that provide you with the complete experience of owning a swimming pool. We have put together a list of different ways you can design a pool that fully engages most of your senses.

Sight

  • Liners - There are numerous liner options you can choose from. Liners play an important part in what your pool physically looks like. You can choose different patterns and shades and they each give your pool a unique view. Finding a liner you like will help you set the mood for your backyard!

  • Laminars - They are big arches of water that can go quite high up in the air and look very dramatic but elegant. You can even add lights to them to give them a magical look at night.

  • Color-changing LED lights - Color-changing LED lights are one of the most cost-efficient features you can add to elevate your pool experience. A night swim after a long day is the best way to truly relax!

Hearing

  • Bubblers - These are one of our favorite features because of how fun they are. Bubblers are essentially just bubbling water but they provide the perfect background white noise to soothe your nerves after a long day. Research shows that white noise helps induce calmness and helps you sleep better!

  • Waterfall - This is another great option to incorporate some water sounds into your backyard. Waterfalls not only provide ambient noise but are also great to stimulate your sense of touch when you are relaxing in the water.

Taste

  • Enjoy a summer beverage - While you cannot drink pool water you certainly can enjoy a cold beverage while lounging in your pool!

  • Backyard Grill - Installing a grill in your backyard if you don't already have one is another way to elevate your pool day. It also makes for a great family bonding time.

Smell

  • The smell of a clean pool - If you are a swimmer you already know how soothing the smell of a clean pool can be. Clean pool water has a very light scent that is not overpowering but still engages the sense of smell.

  • Aromatic Flowers - Planting flowers that release scents like roses or lavender in your backyard can be the perfect source of the aroma. Flowers are also a great way to engage in your sense of sight.

Touch

  • Water - Touch is the most stimulated sense when immersed in a pool. The water molds around your body and moving through it feels like the most relaxing hug!

  • Cozy outdoor furniture - If you are redoing your backyard, putting out some comfortable outdoor furniture to relax on is a must!

  • Tanning ledges - Tanning ledges not only give your pool a luxurious look they are also great for when you just want to relax in the pool but not be fully immersed. You can also accessorize your tanning ledges with loungers.
