What Pool Safety Equipment Should I Add to My New Pool?
Summertime is here, which means it’s time to break out the swimsuits and enjoy some time in the sun! If you have a backyard pool, you’re probably already thinking about how to make the most of it this season. But before you start inviting friends and family over for pool parties, there’s something important you need to do: make sure your pool is safe.
If you're like most people, you probably think that pools are only meant for fun and recreation. As a homeowner, you may have been dreaming of the day when you get to step into your backyard to see the pool of your dreams just waiting for you to jump in. However, there is a lot to consider before and after your pool is installed to ensure that it stays both safe and fun for everyone who wants to enjoy it.
Ensuring that you’ve got the proper safety measures installed on your pool to prevent an accident from happening should be your top priority during the research and installation of your in-ground pool.
Installing safety equipment may seem like an inconvenience, but it’s nothing compared to the alternative. There are many ways to make your pool safer for your family and friends. One of the best things you can do is to add some safety equipment. This can help prevent accidents and even save lives. Here are some of the best and most effective pool safety equipment you should consider adding to your new pool:
1. A Secure Fit Pool Cover
One of the most important pieces of pool safety equipment you can invest in is a cover. A cover can help prevent accidental drownings by keeping children, pets, and wildlife out of the water when you're not around. It's also a good idea to get a cover that is specifically designed for your pool. This will ensure that it fits properly and doesn't blow away in the wind. As an added benefit, it can also help prevent leaves, sticks, and trash from blowing into your pool, shortening the amount of time you spend cleaning before enjoying your pool.
2. A Pool Fence & Locking Gate
Another great way to keep your pool safe is to install a fence around it. This will create a barrier that will make it more difficult for children and pets to get into the water. It's important to choose a fence that is tall enough so that kids can't climb over it. You should also install a secure childproof lock and make sure that the gate is always locked when the pool is not in use. The right gate and lock system can completely prevent a toddler or young child from being able to access the pool without assistance.
3. Pool Alarms
Pool alarms are another excellent way to keep your family safe. These alarms will sound if someone falls into the water. They can be placed on the side of the pool or on a nearby chair or table. You can also find pool alarms that can be worn by swimmers. These are great for kids who are just learning to swim. However, you should not 100% rely on these for your child’s safety. Always keep an eye on any children that are in or around the pool so that you can prevent an accidental fall.
4. A Resuscitation Device
If someone does happen to fall into your pool and is not responsive upon pulling them out, it's important to have a resuscitation device on hand. This could be an oxygen tank or a CPR mask. Having this equipment can mean the difference between life and death. It’s also a great idea for the adults in your home - as well as any teenagers - to take a CPR course. Not only is this excellent emergency practice for them, but it helps everyone be prepared in case of an accident.
5. A First Aid Kit
Keeping a first aid kit near your pool is also a good idea. This way, you'll be prepared in case someone gets hurt. Be sure to include bandages, antiseptic cream, and pain medication.
6. A Chart of Pool Rules
Advising children and teenagers not to run around the pool, dive into the shallow end, or swim without adult supervision should definitely be on the shortlist of Pool Rules. Once you know the design and layout of your pool and surrounding area, you can write up a list of rules that you want your family and any visitors to follow when enjoying your new pool. Making them aware of the dangers can help prevent any accidents or injuries.
7. Pool Rope and a Life Ring or Shepherd’s Crook (Hook)
Having these devices near your pool can help you get someone (or a pet) out of the pool faster than if you were to jump in to try to retrieve them. If you have a fence surrounding your pool, they can be easily stored by hanging them on the fence, ensuring that they’re within reach in case of an accident or emergency.
By following these tips, you can help make your pool a safer place for your family and friends. While some of them may seem excessive or “no brainers,” it’s always better to err on the side of caution and overexplain just to ensure that everyone understands the importance of enjoying your new pool safely. In addition, being over-prepared (arguably not a thing) is better than being underprepared and can ensure that an unfortunate situation doesn’t turn into a disastrous one.
